Ecosia: The Carbon Negative Search Engine!
"To wish for change will change nothing; To make the decision to take action right now will change everything."
This quote can be applied to SO many situations in life, but I often come back to it when I feel like I need a push in the butt to look for some new way that I can make a difference! I will admit that I usually gravitate towards the easiest and non-time consuming ways to make either sustainable changes for myself personally or to contribute to the climate movement. I was SO excited to find Ecosia, a carbon negative search engine company who use their revenue to fund tree planting projects in communities all over the world! It takes only 45 searches to fund the planting of 1 tree, and the company is averaging funding 1 tree every second right now.
An average internet user can protect about 2,000 square meters of rainforest every year by using Ecosia (according to their site)– which is about the size of an ice hockey field. If only 1% of global internet users accessed Ecosia for their web searches, we could save a rainforest area as big as Switzerland each year. I hope this article inspires you to choose to take action right now and contribute to enacting change today!
If you are looking for a way to actively contribute to the climate movement every day- I highly urge you to learn about Ecosia and install it onto your web browser today. Your searches on Ecosia are powered by 100% renewable energy; they plant trees that fight climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, and they accelerate the energy transition away from fossil fuels by adding solar energy to the electricity grid; it truly makes you wonder why every search engine hasn't transitioned.
Ecosia began building their own solar plants in 2018 and have added enough clean energy to their grid to power every single Ecosia search with 100% renewable energy!
What's even more amazing is the fact that this year, Ecosia is going to produce DOUBLE the amount of solar power needed to power all Ecosia searches, making them one of the first carbon negative companies!
Where are the trees planted?
Ecosia uses an integrated landscape approach that supports nature and people by building corridors, capturing water or changing the local climate positively. All tree planting projects are developed with the local community to ensure that it will not only benefit the Earth, but the people who will be caring for the trees and enacting restoration.
Ecosia supports over 20 tree-planting projects in 15 different countries; Peru, Brazil, Madagascar, Nicaragua, Haiti, Colombia, Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Indonesia. To achieve that, they work with local partners who are able to monitor the trees on the ground.
Did you know?
The CO2 footprint of an average search is estimated at 0.2 grams. Servers use a lot of power. If the internet were a country, it would rank #3 in the world in terms of electricity consumption. By using Ecosia for your every day internet searches you can ensure that you have NO carbon footprint from your (most likely) daily internet use!
Some good news!
Google began offsetting 100 percent of its energy usage with clean energy purchases in 2018 that cover both its data centers and offices. Its actual power still comes largely from dirty sources, but it buys an equivalent amount of clean energy which is a step in a good direction for the largest search engine.
Microsoft states that it is on pace to offset 60 percent of its energy usage by the end of 2019, and is committed to 70 percent by 2023.
GiveWater shares its revenue profits among charitable partners, which in turn use the funding to provide better water and sanitation facilities to people in need.
Ekoru donates 60% of its monthly revenue to one of several partner charities, ranging from those focusing on reforestation and climate action to those who are dedicated to animal welfare and conservation. They also aim to select a different charitable cause every month. Ekoru uses renewable energy sources for its data centers and takes a stand for civil rights by not storing any user or search-related data on their servers. (Ecosia does not store your data either)!
Givero allows its users to select which causes they want to back and uses portions of the revenue you generate to donate.
If you take this step of action today, you will be contributing to habitat restoration and CO2 removal every single day without even thinking about it! I am so grateful to companies and organizations like these that make contributing to the climate movement super easy and accessible for everyone.
